ABSTRACT

In Mexico as in other countries, there has been a significant increase in the number of births by caesarean section, which constitutes an important cause of maternal morbidity. In the USA, caesarean sections are the most performed surgical procedure, and nowaday 1 in 4 births is by caesarean section. A large plurinstitutions public study in August 1996 reports an alarming increase in the number of caesarean births from 5.5% in 1970 to 22.8% in 1988.
