ABSTRACT

In 2003, Mexico embarked on a structural reform to improve the health system performance by establishing the System of Social Protection in Health. The main innovation has been the Seguro Popular. In this work, we review the experience of breast cancer at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (INCan), whose costs were covered by the Seguro Popular. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on this group of patients who received medical treatment at the INCan from 2007 to 2013. This analysis included demographic, diagnostic, clinical and survival data. Results: A total of 3,109 cases was reviewed. The median age was 50 years; 70% were diagnosed in clinical stage IIA and higher; 80% required multidisciplinary treatment; 22% had over expression of HER2; and 17% were triple negative. The overall survival was comparable to that observed in other populations, according to clinical stage and immunophenotype. Conclusion: The clinical experience of the INCan showed excellent results in the control of this disease, with excellent follow-up. However, it is essential to improve the primary and secondary prevention programs for breast cancer in Mexico, due to the high personal and economic costs that this public health problem yields to our country.
