ABSTRACT

The golden rules have diagnostic utility in acid-base imbalances, especially to differentiate between a mix of conditions, ie when there are acid-base alterations of different origin in the same patient. The first rule is useful for the diagnosis of respiratory disorders, the second for diagnosing metabolic and the third establishes treatment. In this paper we explain the three golden rules of bicarbonate, and how to apply them with some examples.
