ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to determine the species of fish-eating birds, especially those that spread gnathostomosis, and to describe the injury caused by this larvae in muscles, where this injury frequently occurs. Twenty-five birds belonging to four families from six locations were studied. Fifteen advanced third-stage larvae (L3 A) of the genus Gnathostoma were recovered from skeletal musculature of six fish-eating birds by artificial digestive methods. Portions of infected musculature were fixed in a 10% formalin solution in order to obtain histological information. The evidence shows, that larvae of Gnathostoma occurring in musculature of birds causes an inflammatory reaction of a granulomatous nature.
