ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cancer diagnosis causes behavioral and emotional changes in children and families, such as depression, loneliness and hopelessness. Among different questionnaires for measurement of quality of life in children, PedsQL has been applied in a variety of countries and populations. Material and methods: PedsQL Cancer Module© was applied to 199 children and their caregivers from the Juan I. Menchaca Civil Hospital from Guadalajara, the objective was to analyze the psychometric properties of PedsQL Cancer Module© in parents and their cargivers reports. We also assed the quality of life in relation to medical treatment phase. Results: Psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of PedsQL Cancer Module© were similar to original version. The correlation of reports between parents and caregivers were moderate in all subscales. Patients with better quality of life were those in palliative care followed by those in vigilance, treatment and relapse. Conclusion: PedsQL Cancer Module© is a valid and reliable instrument to measure quality of life in Mexican children its use is recommended as guidance to health-care professionals for the design of interventions to improve the health conditions of children with cancer.
