ABSTRACT

Introduction: optical penetrating keratoplasty is the replacement of all corneal thickness from a donor with the purpose of returning the corneal transparency and improve visual acuity. The Ophthalmological Center of Ciego de Avila is attached to the National Program of Organ and Tissue Donation and penetrating keratoplasty surgery from 2011; 6 patients of optical corneal transplant have been operated up to the present. Objective: to describe some general aspects of patients undergoing this procedure in the corneal service of the Ophtalmological Center of Ciego de Avila. Method: the sample consisted of 6 patients, 4 male and two female, aged between 43 and 76 years. Results and Discussion: corneal conditions under which the surgical procedure is indicated: pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, corneal leukoma, corneal dystrophy gelatinous drop and graft rejection; all of them had impaired preoperative best corrected visual acuity in ranges of hand movements to 0.05 which improved three months after surgery between 0.2 and 0.5, also spherical and cylindrical components of refraction. Conclusions: optical penetrating keratoplasty meant an excellent treatment option for the investigated patients. It was found a recovery of spherical and cylindrical components in the postoperative refraction.
