ABSTRACT

Introduction: The prevalence of primary cardiac tumors is 0.001 to 0.03%. In Mexico, the incidence is not exactly known. Among the primary tumors, 75% are benign neoplasms; most of them are myxomas (50%). The remaining 25% are malignant tumors such as lymphomas and sarcomas. Objective: To determine the lineage of resected cardiac tumors in Centro Médico ABC, as well as the symptoms and surgical outcomes of the patients. Method: This is a retrolective, observational and descriptive study. Results: In the period from January 2000 to December 2012, twelve biopsies of cardiac tumors were reported. The mean age was 55 ± 13 years, 83.3% were women. 50% of the patients had no comorbidities. The main symptoms were cardiovascular (50%); 75% were cardiac myxomas. The main location was the left atrium (58.3%). 75% presented no postoperative complications. The average hospital stay was eight days. There was no hospital mortality. Conclusions: To date, there are no reports of private hospitals in relation to the incidence of cardiac tumors. In this study, in a period of twelve years, we found twelve patients with cardiac tumors, of which the myxoma was the most frequent one. The mortality was 0%.
