Some variables related to the diagnosis of gestational diabetes in Ciego de Avila

ABSTRACT

Introduction: diagnosis and treatment oportune warrant the best result from mother and foetus in patient with gestational diabetes.
Objective: to identify some variables related to gestational diabetes diagnosis.
Method: an observational and descriptive study was carried out, from September 2014 to February 2015, in 71 cases from 103 reported new cases of the South Area of Ciego the Ávila. The data collection was carried out from the patient records consultation and medical records.
Results: the patients diagnosed with gestational diabetes, 53% were between 20 and 30 years. The 45% had a family history of diabetes mellitus; 32,3% and 45% were overweight or obese respectively. The diagnosis was made in 33,8% between 20 and 28 weeks. The average blood glucose in the second hour was 9.1mmol /l. Once the diagnosis was made 33,8% of the patients took between 1 and 2 weeks to go consultation and 2-3 weeks 32,3%.
Conclusions: the diagnoses of gestational diabetes was more related to a family history of diabetes mellitus and overweight or obese to the up take. Although the diagnosis was between 20 and 28 weeks, there was a long delay in going to the consultation. The Maternal Infantile Program at the institutions, should develop an own strategy to prevent late identification and references postponed in gestational diabetes.
