ABSTRACT

Cardiac events are common complications of surgery, occurring in 1 to 5% of unselected patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. Until recently, attempts to reduce the incidence of these complications depend on perioperative risk assessments followed by clinical recommendations. Several recent randomized trials have examined the effects of perioperative beta-blockers in patients with outcomes including perioperative ischemia, myocardial infarction and mortality. Despite the heterogeneity of the trials, the growing literature suggests a benefit of beta-blockers in preventing perioperative cardiac morbidity. It is essential that the decision to use beta-blockers is made on a case by case based on risk stratification as part of the criteria. The objective of this work is to evaluate the current medical literature on the use of perioperative beta-blockade for reducing cardiac events.
