ABSTRACT

Hearing disorders are a major health problem among children, due to the negative effects on their personal, family and social development. Detect early allows timely intervention in order to avoid further negative consequences. Objective: A screening took place in 98 schools in the city of Colima, Colima, Mexico, to determine the prevalence of hearing loss in 364 schoolchildren of both sexes between 5 and 9 years. Material and methods: Audioscope 3 Welch Allyn was used in non sono-isolated environment. Values of the hearing thresholds were classified as proposed by the WHO scale. Results: 8.2% of hearing loss for the right ear, 4.7% for the left ear and 10.7% with bilateral loss was found. Conclusions: Audiometry is a highly recommended procedure as required in the paediatric population screening.
