ABSTRACT

The concept of sagittal balance of spine arises from the time of Hippocrates, when making his description of the curvatures of the spine, he tried to understand the mechanics the workings of this structure. In order to maintain an erect posture, an individual must combine optimally alignment of the spine, the structure of the pelvis, mainly from the spine-pelvic junction and alignment of the pelvic limbs, requiring at the same time to make the least possible energy consumption without causing discomfort or pain due to stretching of the muscles, ligaments and tendons that must change position to achieve this position. This article aims to explain the basic concepts that make up the sagittal balance of the spine.
