Universal coverage. A look from health economics

ABSTRACT

Background: In Cuba universal coverage is a priority and there is emphasis on providing quality health with efficacy. During working discussions subjects such as health economics linked to updating of the Cuban economic model and transformations performed by the National Health System have been tackled. In this discussion strengthening on economic contents associated to universal coverage has been considered as a challenge. Objective: To describe universal coverage in Cuba from the perspective of working fields of health economics. Methods: A bibliographical review based on the application of BIC6 model was performed as well as a brainstorm. Findings: Working fields in health economics are a valuable perspective for the analysis of the universal coverage in Cuba. Planning is emphasized as a basic category in a socialist economy. Conclusions: Treatment of health coverage from the perspective of working fields of health economics provides a novel analysis at the same time that it contributes to the best benefit of tools provided by this scientific discipline.
