ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of disability and mortality in Cuba, whose aging is accelerated.
Objective: To estimate the global cardiovascular risk in the Cuban population and determine their levels by sex, geographic areas and age groups.
Method: Cross-sectional study whose data come from the Third National Survey of Risk Factors for NCDs, 2010-2011, representative of the population aged 15 and over, by sex and age groups in urban and rural areas. We decided to use the risk prediction charts The WHO/ISH. The variables included were age, sex, snuff consumption, blood pressure, diabetes and total blood cholesterol. The risk was classified as low (‹10%), moderate (10 to 19.9%), high (20 to 29.9%), very high (›=30%). Absolute frequencies, percentages and 95% CIs were calculated. A weighting factor was used that would allow for estimates at the country level.
Results: 5.2% of the Cuban population had high or very high cardiovascular risk, 8.6% moderate risk and 86% low risk. The greatest risk was predominant in men and women dominated the low-risk category (89.4 vs. 81.8). Increased risk of men in urban areas. Overall it increased with age; in women at the expense of moderate risk; in men at the expense of high risk.
Conclusions: The estimation of cardiovascular risk in the Cuban population and the determination of their levels contribute to address more effective prevention and control. the necessary effort is justified by national boards build cardiovascular risk assessment that conform more closely to the characteristics of the Cuban population.
