ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the epidemiology of trauma brain injury (TBI) in children under 15 years. Methodology: Hospital registry study was performed in the Emergency Pediatric Room (ERP) of the Hospital Civil Fray Antonio Alcalde for six years. The tendency of TBI was reviewed by severity, age, gender, date the trauma, length of stay in the EPR and lethality. The consecutive sampling inclusion of children with TBI was classified by the severity Glasgow coma scale (ECG). Results: In EPR were recorded 190,765 patients, 3,810 (2%) had TBI; 63% boys and 37% girls (p = 0.01). The highest frecuency was in 2009, the lowest in 2011 and increased the following years. Cases of mild and moderate TBI showed less on days off than on school days; OR 0.84 (95% CI from 0.72 to 0.99). Conclusions: TBI was more common in boys than girls and against expected it was more frequent on school days than on holidays.
