ABSTRACT

Introduction: Pseudopiptadenia contorta (DC.) G.P. Lewis & M.P. Lima is a leguminous tree whose popular name is angico. In popular Brazilian’s medicine their barks are used in the treatment of wounds and burns.
Objective: to investigate the effect of the angico hydro-alcoholic extract on the skin wounds closure by secondary intention by measuring the wound contract ratio and stereological analysis from cicatricial tissue.
Methodology: extract of 400g milled bark was produced by maceration using 1:1 water/ethanol until exhaustion. The cream has been prepared with Lanete 24% added to extract of angico reaching 1% and 5% concentration. Twenty-four male rabbits, type Albino New Zealand, of 60 days, weighing 2,8Kg, split randomly in 4 groups six animals each in which has been induced, by surgery, with a scalpel, a 1,5x1,5cm wound over dorsal-thoracic area. G1 treated, day-by-day, with 0.9% saline solution; G2: extract of angico 1%; G3: extract of angico 5% and G4: treated with Fitoscar®. The wound contraction index (CI) was measured on 7th 10th and 14th day after surgery. Euthanasia performed just after the 14th day when skin samples being available to proceed with the stereological analysis related to fibroblasts, blood vessels, inflammatory cells and collagen maturation index.
Results: extract of angico 1% and 5% concentration, put forward the wound contraction, fibroblast proliferation, neovascularization and collagen maturation.
Conclusion: the use of angico extracts, 1 % and 5 %, demonstrated its effectiveness to wound healing process, highlighting its performance on proliferative phase, justifying its adoption on popular medicine and potential utilization to phitotherapy treatment.
