ABSTRACT

Introduction: there are low reports about adverse reactions to medications in Odontology, that can be related to lack of knowledge of its personnel about pharmacological watching.
Objective: to identify the knowledge and practice about pharmacological watching of the dentistry personnel in three municipalities from Havana during the years 2011 and 2012.
Method: descriptive, transversal study. The universe was formed by the dentists, technicians and technologists of dental assistance who worked during the months November, 2011 and February, 2012 in the dental clinics from Guanabacoa, Regla and San Miguel del Padrón, Havana province, Cuba. The non probabilistic sample, was of 163 persons. The variables about knowledge and practice were classified in correct and incorrect, according to the answer to a questionnaire ; years of professional experience was analyzed and if the dentists were specialists and professors.
Results: the right answers about knowledge were higher in dentists (54,8%) than in technicians and technologists (47,8%). The contrary was observed related to practice. The 95,1% did not know the official model to report adverse reactions, 73 % recognized that medications can cause adverse reactions , 77,9% asked the patients about the medications they regularly take , 87,7% never reported an adverse reaction. The right answers decreased in relation to more years of professional experience; the ones with scientific of teaching category or specialists answered better about knowledge but no about practice.
Conclusions: knowledge and practice about pharmacological watching of the dentistry personnel were deficient. So some Intervention measures are required to change this situation.
