Educative intervention about prevention of home accidents

ABSTRACT

Introduction: non intentional accidents or lesions are considered a worldwide health problem and an epidemic.
Objectives: to evaluate the result of an educative intervention about knowledge of prevention of home accidents in a group of mothers and children younger than five years old.
Methods: a pre-experimental study about community intervention, type before/after was performed, in a group of mothers and children younger than five years old in three Doctor’s Offices from “Luis Li Trijent” University Policlinic in Güines, Mayabeque Province from July to December, 2013. The universe corresponded to the total of mothers with children younger than five years old. Knowledge about prevention of animal bites, mechanical asphyxia, and suffocation, intoxication by toxic substances, electrocution, and Broncho aspiration of external bodies, before and after the educative intervention was determined. The study had three stages: diagnostic, intervention and evaluation. The results were presented in figures and percentages. Chi square statistical test was applied.
Results: 68% of the mothers showed insufficient knowledge about how to prevent animal bites, the 69.1% about mechanical asphyxia and suffocation, 30.9% about ingestion of toxic substances, 58.82% about electrocution, and 14.8% about prevention of Broncho aspiration of external bodies, which was increased after the educative program was performed.
Conclusions: the educative program contributed significantly to increase the knowledge about prevention of home accidents in mothers of children younger than five years old.
