ABSTRACT
The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) detects and corrects potentially lethal ventricular arrhythmias by controlling heart rhythm cardioversion and defibrillation. While most people are able to tolerate ICD shock, their real benefits in terms of quality of life are diminished by the fear of discharge and the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ICD acceptability and levels of anxiety, depression and quality of life in a sample of 42 ICD patients from the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad from Hospital de Cardiología del Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI. Patients were evaluated with the hospital anxiety and depression scale, the quality of life questionnarie related to health and the device acceptance survey in a 60 minutes session. Spearman correlations showed that the acceptance to device was inversely associated with depression (p = 0.033); a positive relation between depression and anxiety (p = 0.025) and a negative correlation between anxiety and quality of life (p = 0.019) was confirmed. The need of developing institutional programs which provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment (both medical and psychological) to these patients is mentioned.REFERENCES
