ABSTRACT

The orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst is a developmental cyst that is rarely found in the jawbones. It was first described by Philipsen in 1956 as a variant of the odontogenic keratocyst (keratocystic odontogenic tumor) and subsequently identified as having a totally different pathology by Wright. The lesion remains a subject of debate to this day. We report the case of a 15-year-old male patient who came to the oral and maxillofacial surgery service of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers’ «Lic. Adolfo López Mateos» Regional Hospital, where he was diagnosed with an orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst. A suitable course of clinical diagnosis coupled with the use of images and, most importantly, the result of an incisional biopsy are essential if we are to be able to diagnose and avoid over-treating conditions which, by using less invasive and less aggressive procedures, have a better prognosis.
