ABSTRACT

The occurrence of incisional hernias at the site of cannula insertion for laparoscopic surgery is an uncommon complication which appears to be caused by the sudden extraction of the laparoscopic cannula in the presence of neumoperitoneum, resulting in outward pressure that forces the entrapment of small bowel at the cannula site, producing a Richter’s type hernia, which can present earlier as an acute abdomen or later on as an incisional hernia. In this paper we present cases of this rare complication and suggest measures to avoid them.
