ABSTRACTIntroduction: Nursing professional performance is a definition poorly addressed, a reason why it is necessary an evaluative analysis of concepts and approaches for their training, from referents of the international and Cuban contexts and its implications in nursing professional performance.
Objective: To systematize the definition of nursing professional performance, considering its relation with the current conditions in Cuban nursing practice.
Methods: An analysis was carried out of the contents of documents, which included original and review articles published from 2005 to 2014, with the following key words: performance, professional performance and nursing professional performance, in SciELO, Dialnet and Medline/Pubmed. Ten articles were identifies and reviewed, out of which three were useful, as well as textbooks, monographs from several journals and doctoral dissertations, which allowed the logical-historic analysis of the evolution of the definition.
Conclusions: The systematization of the terms related with nursing professional performance permitted to operatively define performance and nursing professional performances. There a small number of authors that address this category. However, the general problems faced by the Cuban nursing professionals and the particularities of the Cuban health context produce the need for new challenges in such improvement. The need is perceived for detailed approach the nursing professional performance as a uniting element of the meeting of need during the management of care.
