Periodontal state and its possible relationship to functional occlusal variables

ABSTRACT

A transversal descriptive study was aimed at characterizing possible relationship between occlusal factor and periodontal state in patients attended in the periodontics service at «Victoria de Santa Clara» Stomatological Clinic from November, 2010 to September, 2011. A number of 40 patients and 1112 teeth constituted the units of analysis. Periodontal state was determined by applying Russell's periodontal index and Miller's mobility index, periodontal pocket depth measurements and presence or absence of bone loss. There was no correlation between pockets depth and functional occlusal alterations, with the exception of excessive tooth-to-tooth contact. Angular bone losses presented higher deep pockets. Distribution of the affected teeth in their occlusal function did not follow a unique tendency according to the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs. The majority of teeth with functional alterations had denture mobility.
