ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cognitive impairment (CI) impacts the quality of life of people with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Objective: To define the pattern of CI in patients with MS and to compare it with a healthy population from the western-central area of Mexico, using the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests.
Methods: An observational retrolective study carried out with people of similar age, sex, and education level.
Results: One hundred seventy-seven people participated in each group. It was found that 64% of the patients presented with CI, 25% of those with minor grade cognitive impairment and 39% of those with severe grade cognitive impairment. The patients with MS were 18.8 times more likely to suffer from CI, in comparison with the control group (RR= 18.8, IC 8.5-41.6). The best predictor of cognitive function was the female gender, age ‹ 32 years, education › 13 years, EDSS ‹ 6.5, clinical form with recurrence, evolution of the illness ‹ 5 years and the absence of depression.
Conclusions: In the group of patients studied, there exists a high index of CI related to MS. The most significant clinical presentation occurred in verbal memory, attention span and information processing speed.
