ABSTRACT

We present the experience of two institutions with surgery of the gallbladder in a group of patients under 20 years old. Patients and methods: From January 1994 to October 1999 at the Pemex Hospital there were 7 patients, two underwent an open cholecistectomy and the other five had a laparoscopic procedure. At the ABC Medical Center two patients had open surgery and eleven laparoscopic surgery. Premature was found in 50% of the cases at both institutions. At the Pemex Hospital the operation was elective in 5 patients (71.42%) an emergency in 2 (28.75%). At the Hospital ABC surgery was elective in 10 patients (76.92%) and emergency in 3 (23.07%). Conclusion: Cholelithiasis in the pediatric age group is not common. We observed a history of prematurity in 50% of any patients. The diagnosis was established by ultrasound in all cases. The operation was emergency in 75% and elective in 25%. Where was no morbidity and no mortality.
