ABSTRACT
Objective: Report and description of the adjustable gastric banding (Swedish) by laparoscopy, for the surgical treatment of severe obesity; the first 100 cases.
Site: Teaching hospital.
Material and patients: Whit experience of 46 gastric Bypasses and 248 Vertical Gastroplasties with the Sylastic Ring via laparotomy (October 1991 to April 1998), during the period of May 1998 and March 2001 respectively, we operated a total of 100 patients, by Laparoscopy gastric Banding for surgical treatment for severe obesity, describing the study protocol the technique and the results.
Results: A total of 100 patients were operated, 74 female (74%) and 26 male (26%) with an age percentage of 40.5 years (13 to 68), and BMI on the average of 41.5 kg/m2 the corporal area (37 to 46). In 97 patients (97%) the technique was done via laparoscopy and in 3 (3%) installed via laparotomy because of previous surgery, in the 97 cases of laparoscopy, in two cases had been changed because of technical difficulty (2.06%), it was present a case of gastric perforation (1.03%) and in the other (1.03%) the band was removed 15 days later because the patient refusal. Lost of weight a month later of 12 kg. Up to date in has not been any case of mortality.
Conclusions: The Laparoscopic Gastric Banding has demonstrate to be good technique for the surgical treatment in severe obesity, but it is recommended to have a good training in traditional techniques, and to have very good experience in laparoscopy of the hiatus.
