ABSTRACT
Determination of serum bilirubin involves a painful puncture. Transcutaneous bilirrubinometry is a rapid, non-invasive procedure that may avoid unnecessary punctures for determining the level of bilirubin.
Objective: To assess the correlation between the measurement of the transcutaneous bilirrubinometry and serum bilirubin in term newborns and late preterm infants at the onset time of jaundice.
Material and methods: We prospectively enrolled 111 newborn of 34 or more weeks of gestational age, the transcutaneous bilirrubinometry in the sternal region (mg/dL) at the onset time of jaundice was measured with a JM 103 icterometer, as well as the serum bilirrum through dry chemistry with a VITROS
® equipment 5.1, in a period no longer than thirty minutes.
Results: A total of 111 neonates (range 34 to 41.1 gestation weeks, birth weight 1,480-4,460 g) were performed determination of the transcutaneous bilirrubinometry and serum bilirubin upon detection of jaundice. The correlation coefficient between serum bilirubin and the transcutaneous bilirubin was r = 0.715, with p ‹ 0.001 and a mean difference of 0.7 ± 3.5 mg/dL between the two determinations.
Conclusions: There is good correlation between the serum bilirubin and transcutaneous bilirrubinometry in newborns of term and late preterm. This de vice can be used in clinical practice to reduce unnecessary taking blood samples.
