ABSTRACT

Objective: Show the initial experience on the Tenckhoff catheters installation by endoscopic surgery. Location: Regional Zone Hospital No. 1 Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Design: Prospective, longitudinal study. Material and methods: It is include in this study the first 35 Tenckhoff Catheters applied by laparoscopic via, from January 18 to December 31, 2001; there were analyzed the following factors: age, sex, initial diagnosis, surgical time, prehospital and intrahospital stay, catheter reinstallation, peritoneal dialysis effectiveness, dysfunctions, alternative surgical procedures and mortality. Results: The most affected group was the female with 65.71% of the cases, followed by the male group with a 34.29%; the age rate was 49.7 years, it was obtained a surgical time average of 42.3 minutes; the most frequent causes for the chronic renal failure did not present any variation, with the 45.71% for diabetes mellitus secondary to hypertensive cardiopathy, the 20% for the glomerulonephritis and finally for other causes, it was obtained a postoperatory intrahospital stay of 2.7 days, there were installed only 3 catheters, any conventional surgery conversion was performed, and there was only one surgical death. Conclusions: The laparoscopic use of Tenckhoff catheter has been an effective and safety alternative in our hospital which gives great benefits to advance renal failure patients, this initial experience shows encouraging results.
