ABSTRACT

To evaluate the results of the laparoscopic splenectomy in the treatment of benign hematologic illnesses, we retrospectively reviewed the cases of all the patients that were taken to laparoscopic splenectomy between February of 1993 and February of 2002. A total of 88 serial patients were evaluated. Of the 88 taken patients and laparoscopic splenectomy during the period of study, only one need convertion to open surgery. Most of the procedures were carried out by Idiopathic Thrombocitopenic Purpura in 60 patients (68%). The average of duration of the hospitalization was of 2.2 days. A death was documented in the postoperative period due to a pulmonary embolism. The initial answer to the procedure in the count of platelets to the 15 days was of 78%. The complications happened in 5 patients without new surgical procedures. Laparoscopic splenectomy is a safe and effective method in the treatment of benign hematologic illnesses. It has all the advantages of the minimally invasive surgery and it should become the election technique for this type of entities.
