ABSTRACT

Introduction: the nutritional assessment is one of the cornerstones for further action on the various conditions of the patient admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Objective: to assess the nutritional status of critically ill patients, depending on the type of disease, in the Intensive Care Unit of the Provincial General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" of Ciego de Ávila province.
Method: an analytical observational cross-sectional study was carried out in the Intensive Care Unit of the Provincial General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" of Ciego de Ávila, between March 2012 and March 2013. The universe consisted of the total of critically ill patients admitted to the Unit in the period; the sample was composed of 535 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: the highest number of patients corresponded to female, white skin and over 50 years. Nonsurgical causes were the most frequent reason for admission. Regarding body mass index, obesity predominated over malnutrition. Enteral was the nutrition way more used, particularly in non-surgical patients; the most frequent complications were constipation and gastric residual increase. The percentage of patients discharged alive was higher than the deceased, with the highest survival rate in patients with enteral nutrition and those with hospital stay of 1 to 7 days.
Conclusions: adequate nutritional assessment of the patient in critical care reduces morbidity and mortality.
