Junk food consumption and nutritional status in school-age children in Mexico City

ABSTRACT
Objective: To correlate the consumption of junk food with nutritional status of school-age children in a vulnerable area of Mexico City.
Material and methods: 394 schoolchildren aged 6 to 11 years old of both gendres from an area of low socioeconomic status were studied. A standardized survey to obtain sociodemographic data and junk food consumption was applied. Weight and height of each participant were obtained, whereby the body mass index (BMI) was calculated for the purpose of determining whether the nutritional status was normal, overweight or obese.
Results: 64% of the population had normal weight, 19.3% overweight, 13.2% obese, and 3.5% underweight. Children with overweight and obesity had a higher consumption of candies and soft drinks, compared to children who were normal weight (p ‹ 0.05). Overall there was no difference in the consumption of junk food between men and women.
Conclusion: In school-age children with low socioeconomic status seems to be an association between increased consumption of candies and soft drinks with overweight or obesity.
