Cyclic vomiting syndrome: a diagnostic and treatment challenge

ABSTRACT

The cyclic vomiting syndrome is a frustrating and disturbing idiopathic gastrointestinal disorder that often leads to hospitalization. This syndrome remains today a diagnostic challenge since a specific test does not exist and it is based on the fulfillment of diagnostic criteria and the exclusion of other conditions. We report the case of a school girl that started with episodes of severe vomiting, with lethargic or stuporous consciousness. Eventually, a diagnostic delay often leads to deterioration in the quality of life in these patients. Treatment varies depending on the clinical experience, and prophylactic treatment should be recommended to prevent episodes. This manuscript pretends to help meet this increasingly frequent syndrome, and provide guidance in the management for professionals.
