Characterization of fragile elderlies in Doctors’ Offices

ABSTRACT

Introduction: fragility is a biological syndrome where a decreasing of physiological reserve and an increasing of resistance to the stressing factors are produced as a result of a progressive deterioration of the physiological systems that affect a 7% of old people having a prevalence that increases with age.
Objective: to characterize elderlies according to fragility criteria.
Methods: observational, descriptive transversal investigation from January, 2011 to March, 2012. The universe 500 controlled elderlies at Maria Emilia Alfonso, Teaching Policlinic of the health area in Madruga, the sample was selected by identification criteria according to the periodic health check-up, total 120 elderlies taking into account the established inclusion criteria , controlling variables such as age, sex, associated pathologies, fragility criteria, global functional state and family functioning.
Results: elderlies at 80 to 89 age group prevailed with a 17,5%, of the female sex for a 59,1%, the associate pathology was hypertension that represents a 48,33%, among the fragility criteria, age: older than 80 years old for a 70 %, lonely elderlies for a 56,67%, motion and balance alterations and alterations of memory were found in the ones who had a global functional state, as well as functional families for a 57,5%.
Conclusions: the presence of several fragility criteria such as elderlies older than 80 years old, alone, poly-pharmacy, female sex with associated pathologies who live in functional families.
