Oral health status of the geriatric population in a Doctor’s Office at Rampa Policlinic

ABSTRACT

Introduction: population aging in Cuba constitutes a health problem, which demands a multidisciplinary care to keep health and prolong life expectancy.
Objectives: to characterize the health status of the geriatric population in a Doctor’s Office at Rampa Policlinic.
Methods: a descriptive, transversal investigation was performed in the geriatric population of the Doctor’s Office # 8 at Rampa policlinic from 2012 to 2013. The universe was constituted by 82 elders of both sexes who gave their consent to participate in the investigation .The studied variables were: age, sex, presence of oral and systemic diseases and risk factors. The individual health clinical record was the information source, absolute values and percentage were used in the analysis of the results.
Results: the 58,5% corresponded to the female sex and the 39,0% to the 70-79 years old age group, the 90,2% presented masticatory dysfunction, 69.7% suffered from periodontal diseases, 90,2% had rheumatoid arthritis ; 75,6%, hypertension; 69,5%, venous failure and 59,7% diabetes mellitus. The 57, 3% of the elders took from 1 to 3 medications and the 86, 5% ate hot and peppery foods.
Conclusions: the female sex and the 70 a 79 years old age group prevailed, more than a half of the population presented masticatory dysfunction, periodontal diseases and dental caries. The systemic diseases were arthritis, hypertension, venous failure and diabetes mellitus. The use of up to three medications prevailed as well as the ingestion of hot and spicy foods.
