ABSTRACT

Introduction: vaginal infections are frequent during pregnancy and may cause some disorders and complications.
Objective: to characterize pregnant women with syndrome of vaginal discharge admitted to "Alberto Fernandez Valdés" Hospital.
Method: a descriptive transversal study was carried out from 2010 to 2014 in Santa Cruz del Norte, of a universe of 213 pregnant women with syndrome of vaginal discharge and an initial sample of 142 patients taken at random, that was finally constituted by 127 because 15 were lost for lack of information in the clinical records; the data was recollected in a form and distribution of frequencies, media, standard deviation, Student test and Ji square were used for the statistical analysis.
Results: the most frequent infection was vaginal moniliasis; the mid age of pregnant women was 23,6 ± 5,7 years old; the 65,4% presented anterior vaginal infection, 62,2% used previous antimicrobials, 70,1% did not use condom , 49,6% washed themselves more than two times and the 44,9% used a bad technique; preterm delivery threatening was presented in mild frequency and most of them had a term delivery with a proper weight of the newborns without significant neonatal complications, but there was a 11% of puerperal women with endometritis.
Conclusions: most of the pregnant women with syndrome of vaginal discharge were young patients with associated risk factors such as history of vaginal infections and use of antimicrobials, unprotected sexual relations, and bad hygiene techniques, which caused proper pregnancy and puerperal infections with a certain frequency.
