ABSTRACT

Objectives: The use of Robotic Surgical Systems is an expanding technology in the world. Robot-assisted surgery overcomes some limitations of laparoscopy. Mexico joins this advantage in a Third Level Hospital in Zumpango. The present study describes our experience. Methods: From October 2013 to March 2015, 98 patients with different diseases underwent robotic surgery, the surgeries were performed for eight qualified surgeons. Surgical results were recorded in a database. Results: 98 patients underwent robotic surgery, 59% male and 41% female, mean age: 50.9 years. A total of 102 operations, 94 simples and 4 doubles procedures performed; Urological 46.9%, 41.8% general surgeries and 11.2% gynecological surgery. The most common surgery was prostatectomy (31.4%) The average operating time was 178 min. 13.28% rate of complications and one death. Conclusions: Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is a reality in Mexico, the experience is limited but produced encouraging results, we find this practice safe and feasible, with acceptable surgical time, low conversion rates and low morbidity. This study is rewarding for its impact on our health care system but a major revision is important to improve our practice.
