Effectives of an educational intervention about care-givers' knowledge for preventing mistreatment of the aged adult

ABSTRACT

Introduction: in Cuba, despite what the aged adult accounts for the Cuban health, it is estimated that the mistreated aged adult elderly is a hidden phenomenon in the society, which negatively affects their quality of life.
Objective: to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention about the level of knowledge of primary caregivers, in order to prevent mistreatment of the aged adults.
Method: a quasi-experimental study was performed at the family doctor's office number 6 of the Aeropuerto local town, belonging to Policlínico Centro of Ciego de Avila City, 2014. Target group of 100 primary caregivers of aged adults. Data were collected through a survey prepared by the authors and validated by experts, it was applied before and after the intervention to assess its effectiveness. The information was summarized in charts, distribution of absolute and relative frequencies was used as a measure of statistical significance, together with McNemar for dependent samples.
Results: the age group of 40-49 years (37%), women (87%), lower secondary education (67%), patients living with their families (89%), and divorced (47%) predominated. After the intervention, the knowledge level increased from 28% to 92%.
Conclusions: the educational intervention was effective because it increased the level of knowledge of primary caregivers to prevent mistreatment to the aged adult.
