ABSTRACT

Introduction: quality assessment is one of the distinctive topics of research in health systems and services. Its application by nursing professionals is a way to ensure effective monitoring results in different areas of action. In developing these studies, the traditional approach that describes Avedis Donabedian classic dimensions is generally used. Although this methodology is effective, there are others applied less frequently and which are also valid. This is the case of benchmarking.
Objective: to generally present the particularities of benchmarking, as well as the possibility to apply it as a tool to continuously particularly improve nursing practice quality.
Methods:bibliographic and documental review.
Conclusions: benchmarking applied by the nursing professionals is highly useful, because it allows learning from the best practices and avoids repetition in the search for solutions to previously treated problems. For nursing as a discipline in development, it is a methodology that contributes to develop a culture of continuous improvements in quality and leave behind the approach of isolated measurements without links or interconnections.
