ABSTRACT
Introduction: Obtaining a hermetic seal in root-canal fillings is a contributory factor in endodontic success.
Objective: To compare
in vitro apical microleakage, filling quality, and presence of voids in root canals filled using single-cone, cold lateral condensation, and System B obturation techniques.
Material and methods: Ninety mesial roots of mandibular molars were instrumented up to ProTaper F3 and randomly assigned to three groups (n = 30 roots) for filling: group 1 - cold lateral condensation with gutta-percha #30.02; group 2 - single-cone with gutta-percha F3; and group 3 - System B with gutta-percha #30.02. In all techniques, a zinc oxide eugenol mixture was used as a sealer. After the canals were filled, the samples were immersed in methylene blue 0.5%, centrifuged at 3,200 rpm for five minutes, then cleared and observed under a stereomicroscope at 12.5x by a calibrated examiner to measure apical microleakage, filling quality, and the presence of voids.
Results: No significant differences in apical microleakage were found between the cold lateral condensation and System B groups (p › 0.05), while the highest level of leakage was observed when the single-cone technique was used. The System B technique results in the lowest number of voids and a better filling quality.
Conclusions: Using zinc oxide eugenol as a sealer, the cold lateral condensation and System B techniques result in lower apical microleakage a more adequate filling quality than the single-cone technique.
