ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine working length by measuring
in vivo using the Raypex 6 electronic apex locator.
Material and methods: We determined the electronic (Raypex 6) and radiographic working length of 249 root canals of 125 patients requiring endodontic treatment. The patients were treated according to standard clinical protocols. The evaluation was conducted in two stages with two levels of acceptance, the first with a tolerance of ± 0.5 mm and the second with none.
Results: In stage 1 of the evaluation tolerance interval, the measurements were considered adequate (± 0.5 mm) in 96.4% (93.3-98.3) of cases, short (- 0.5/1 mm) in 1.6% of cases (04-4), and excessive (+ 0.5/1 mm) in the remaining 2% (0.7-4), whereas in Stage 2 of the evaluation tolerance interval, the measurements were considered adequate (no tolerance) in 86.4% (81.5-91) of cases, short (- 0.5/1 mm) in 4 % (2-7.8), and excessive (+0.5-1 mm) in the remaining 9% (6-13.5). No significant differences were found in terms of either diagnosis or sex.
Conclusions: Under the conditions in which this study was conducted, the Raypex 6 electronic apex locator provided acceptable clinical reliability at both of the tolerance levels evaluated.
