ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis is an infectious, contagious disease, with a high incidence globally. It is estimated that one third of the world’s population is infected and it is the most common opportunistic infection in AIDS patients. Renal tuberculosis is one of the most common sites of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, and the most common form of genitourinary TB. The clinical manifestations are nonspecific but resemble bacterial cystitis, so the best way to diagnose this is by clinical suspicion, which rises from a resistance to ordinary antibiotic treatment and the presence of sterile pyuria in repeated urine samples. Its early diagnosis is important, since in some cases it can progress to kidney failure, nephrectomy and even death.
