ABSTRACT

Colon cancer is an important cause of morbi-mortality. In Costa Rica, the current incidence is 9.49% for every 100000 inhabitants, making this the fourth most common tumor in the country. Furthermore, regarding mortality it ranks fifth as the most lethal tumor in men and third in women. Surgical advances have provided alternative therapeutic options. The following article compares open colectomy versus laparoscopy in order to compare which surgical technique provides safer and better outcomes as well as diminished mortality in the geriatric population.
