ABSTRACT
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
(NPC) is a tumor that arises
from the epithelial cells of the
nasopharynx, is rare in Europe
and USA but is endemic in
Southeast Asia. Etiological
factors include Epstein Barr
Virus, consumption of salted/
preserved food and genetic
susceptibility. Definitive
diagnosis is made by biopsy of
the primary tumor or lymph
nodes. Magnetic resonance
imaging of the nasopharynx,
skull base and neck is the
imaging technique of choice.
NPC is highly radiosensitive,
and radiation therapy (RT)
is the mainstay of treatment.
Stage I disease is treated by
RT alone, while stage II, III, IV
disease are treated by RT with
concurrent chemotherapy; the
standard agent used is cisplatin.
