ABSTRACT

The thoracic trauma is one if the leading causes of death following motor vehicle accidents. The myocardial trauma has many different presentations, one of them and the most common, the myocardial contusion. Given that most of the times the myocardial contusion is present in a multiple trauma patient, it can be underdiagnosed and its complications can deteriorate the hemodynamic status of the patient and even be the cause of death. There is no gold standard for the diagnosis of myocardial trauma, so there has to be a lot of clinical suspicion and a good physical exam for the doctor to diagnose myocardial contusion. In this article, we review the pathophysiology of the myocardial contusion, the diagnostic methods in which the clinician must support the diagnosis, the possible complications and the general management of the myocardial contusion.
