ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex, progressive, chronic respiratory condition with a high rate of morbidity and mortality resulting in high health costs. It is very common to find acute exacerbations that detereorate the COPD patientes quality of life. An important pillar in the management of these patients is the treatment of exacerbations , which include the use of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) if the patient has severe respiratory failure. Emphasizing that the current evidence supports the use of noninvasive mechanical ventilation, the aim of this article is to provide the most relevant aspects for the optimal management of patients with COPD who require mechanical ventilation.
