ABSTRACTObjetive: The pain is a very important health problem and a subject whose study is increasing. Nonetheless, recent studies show that only 15% of primary care physicians feel capable to treat the chronic pain; and neurons are not only the ones involved in the pain establishment and maintenance. The present study was carried out aiming at evaluating the contribution of the neurological, immune and endocrine systems to the pain pathogeny, in the updated scientif ic literature.
Method: The presence of inflammation in the place damaged causes a sequence of events that produces the concentration and activation of innate immune cells; the production of pro inflammatory cytokines, hormonal and neurotrophic activating factors of glia cells which at the same time disturb the synaptic transmission. All these facts favor the pain persistence.
Conclusions: The interaction of the neurological, immune and endocrine systems in the mechanisms of pain establishment and persistence is unquestionable in the face of the latest scientific findings. Comprehensive modulation of these agents would make available new effective alternatives in the pain management.
