ABSTRACTIntroduction: nursing is a dynamic profession and its practice is constantly changing, that is the reason why the University faces the challenge of forming a number of future professionals considerably superior to the previous stages. The political and ideological work has had to be tempered to the characteristics of the current medical university.
Objective: a retrospective study was performed in order to know the human resources of the nursing and teaching staff formed with the universalization of education in the municipality of Yara in 2015.
Method: a retrospective study was carried out in the municipality of Yara. The universe consisted of 487 students enrolled, taking a sample of 412 graduates. It was selected an intentional sample of 412 graduates at this stage, and they fulfilled the inclusion criteria.
Results: females predominated with 397 for 96.3% and the course of the new training model (NTM) with 53.4%, the greatest number of graduates of the NTM was 53.3%. The NTM contributed to the national mission with 90.16%, followed by the CPT in the international mission with 89.3%. The largest group was located in the necessary tasks to obtain 59.5%. From 26 teachers, 24 were females with 92.3% and the instructor category prevailed with 65.3%.
Conclusions: it is concluded that the challenge was made true with the formation of new nursing professionals and teachers.
