ABSTRACT

Introduction: epiphora is caused by the obstruction of the tear ducts.
Objective: to describe clinical and epidemiological characteristics in patients with puncta lacrimalia treated in the oculoplastics service at "Abel Santamaria Cuadrado" University Hospital during 2015.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with a target group of 687 patients and a sample of 132 having the diagnosis of stenosis of puncta lacrimalia, using chi square and Fisher's test of exact probabilities as statistical methods.
Results: stenosis of puncta lacrimalia frequently occurred in female patients (83) and grade-I stenosis was diagnosed in 52.3% of the cases; the average age 71.88 was frequent. Blepharitis was identified as a risk factor and was present in 45.6% of the cases. Grade-III epifora was diagnosed in 50 patients. The obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct was present in 15.5% of patients treated.
Conclusions: stenosis grade-I of puncta lacrimalia is a common entity in females, and its frequency increases with age. Blepharitis was a risk factor present in a large number of the patients studied, the lower puncta lacrimalia was the most affected, and grade-III epiphora as well as nasolacrimal duct obstruction were widely represented in this study.
