ABSTRACT

Sudden hearing loss is a frightening symptom that often prompts an urgent or emergent visit to a physician. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) involves an acute unexplained hearing loss, nearly always unilateral, that occurs over less than a 72 hour period. There are many etiologies althougt most cases are idiopathic. It affects 5 to 20 per 100,000 population. Promt recognition and management of it may improve hearing recovery and patient quality of life. There is not strong evidence for the efficacy of any treatment option for patients with SSNHL. Glucocorticoids are considered first-line therapy for this syndrome. Approximately twothirds of patients with SSNHL will experience recovery, although this recovery is often not complete.
