ABSTRACT

Introduction: Staphylococcus infections are well-known for their high pathogenic power, where the Staphylococcus aureus is associated with a greater number of clinical conditions in humans.
Objective: to characterize the nasal and pharyngeal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus at "Pepe Portilla" Provincial Children Hospital workers during 2014.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted to characterize nasal and pharyngeal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus at "Pepe Portilla" Provincial Children Hospital workers during the period of 2014. The target group was comprised for 420 workers directly linked to the care of inpatients and the sample included 230 workers who met the inclusion criteria. The information was collected in a form; SPSS version 11.0 was used to perform the statistical analysis.
Results: the presence of Staphylococcus aureus carriers accounted for 13% of the study sample. Nurses represented the highest percentage of carriers. Smoking was the main risk factor associated with carrier status, with chronic diseases.
Conclusions: these results do not match the other authors, but it is still very important to know about the genesis of the health of carriers, particularly of those people who make excessive use of antibiotics and corticosteroids.
