Key words:

headache, lumbar puncture, post lumbar puncture headache.

ABSTRACT

The lumbar puncture is performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, causing headache in up to 40% of cases; and that carries considerable morbidity. Its precise physiopathology is not yet clear, however it is believed that the persistent leakage of cerebrospinal fluid by the separated fibers of the dura, is what generates the headache. There are certain risk factors for the development of this complication, that should be taken into account; as it may evolve to serious complications. This papers reviews the general aspects and the main treatments for the management of post lumbar puncture headache.
